Avoid the Migraine Hangover:  Moving Beyond Medication

Living with daily migraines is like being in a never-ending war with your own body - waking up each day to gauge the level of pain and figuring out how to push through it.

With responsibilities such as young kids, a job, and household duties, retreating to bed isn't always an option, despite the overwhelming desire to do just that. In this blog post, we’re diving into how to avoid the migraine hangover and move beyond medication and start living a life free of pain and overflowing medication cabinets.

The Medication Routine: A Temporary Fix

For years, my day-to-day existence was dictated by my migraines. The routine was always the same: wake up and immediately conduct a mental inventory of my pain levels, followed by the unenviable task of choosing which medication might provide relief that day. Over-the-counter? Or was it a "big gun" kind of day?

My medication cabinet was a testament to my struggle, filled with triptans, NSAIDs, antidepressants, and on particularly brutal nights, sleep aids. Managing and rationing these medications became a necessity, especially the triptans (my "big guns") which were doled out in such limited supply… 9 to be exact for 30 days of pain.

Moving Beyond Medication: Addressing Root Causes

But what if there was another way? What if instead of merely suppressing the symptoms, we could address the root cause of migraines? This realization hit me hard as I struggled with the long-term effects of my medication routine. The side effects were annoying at best (the migraine hangover feeling) and dangerous at worst, with the potential for developing medication overuse headaches (MOH), addiction, and even organ damage.

It was after 10 long years of this day in and day out that I encountered a different approach - an approach outside the conventional medical wisdom. Instead of focusing solely on managing symptoms through medication, this method emphasizes addressing the root causes of inflammation in the body.

A Holistic Approach to Migraine Relief

By targeting six key areas of inflammation, it's possible to significantly reduce (and even eliminate) migraine pain without resorting to a pill bottle. These strategies don't just offer a band-aid solution; they aim to restore the body's natural balance and susceptibility to migraines.

So, what steps can you take today to start on this path of healing and recovery?

Here are some foundational practices that anyone can incorporate:

  • Mindfulness Modulation: Daily mindfulness exercises can help keep you in a parasympathetic, relaxed state, reducing stress and its physical manifestations.
  • Circadian Responsivity: Ensure you get enough sleep by going to bed and waking up at the same time every day.
  • Nutrition Integration: Keep your energy and blood sugar levels stable by eating regular, nutritious meals.
  • Electrolyte Symmetry: Dehydration can trigger migraines, so make sure to drink plenty of water throughout the day.
  • Movement Stabilization: Exercise not only keeps you fit, but also releases pain-blocking chemicals that help reduce migraine occurrences.
  • Toxicity Mitigation: Evaluate your environment and lifestyle for potential sources of toxins and take steps to minimize your exposure.

Remember, before making any significant changes, it's crucial to consult with a member of your healthcare team to ensure these adjustments are appropriate for your situation.

Embracing Lasting Relief

If you're tired of living a life ruled by migraine pain and medication side effects, know that there is another way - a path leading toward lasting relief and health restoration.

Debbie will uncover what is holding them back from migraine freedom so they can live their life pain and symptom free, work productively, spend the time they want with family and friends, and stop missing out on the things they enjoy.

A message from Debbie:
"I was once right where you are now.  100% believing there was NO WAY to end migraines and my only option was to learn how to live with them or find that magic pill that maybe would work for a while.  If anyone told me back then that I could end my pain once and for all, I would have called BS and popped another pill!

Skeptical times 10  was my middle name for sure because when you try it all and everyone tells you they can help you and they don’t.   You stop believing…  you lose HOPE!

I now realize I was approaching my migraines all backward.

I was trying to cover up symptoms versus trying to end my pain."
