Supplementing Your Journey: A Closer Look at Migraines & Natural Relief Options

Do you often feel like your throbbing migraine is the uninvited guest who happens to show up in the middle of a good day?

Reaching for your prescription might seem like the immediate answer to stop the pain, but as we know, these medications can sometimes fall short for women suffering from migraines, often bringing along an intimidating list of side effects.

In this blog post, we’re taking a closer look at migraines and natural relief options so you can figure out how to best supplement your journey to migraine freedom.

Considering Natural Alternatives

It sounds all too familiar, doesn't it?

Struggling with the painful side effects of medication, only to be left wondering if there indeed is a better way.

That’s usually when you start considering alternatives; a more "natural" route to ease your migraines.

Since popping a pill is familiar, many women gravitate towards the works of supplements.

Research points towards supplements potentially helping to manage migraine pain. However, it’s essential to remember they might just be part of the larger solution — not necessarily the magic wand that takes it all away.

So, before deciding to take supplements, ask yourself: "Do I need them due to a genuine deficiency, or am I using these to avoid making the necessary lifestyle changes?"

The swift relief that magnesium, Riboflavin, or Coenzyme Q10 might bring is attractive - we all yearn for that quick fix. Swallowing a pill takes hardly a minute, and it doesn't ask you to make the daunting lifestyle alterations that you may perceive as hard or unpleasant. But remember, every decision has its consequences, so making an informed choice is crucial.

Step Carefully On the Supplement Path

Your healthcare team is your best GPS in this journey. It's essential to consult them before you add any supplement(s) to your routine. They understand your unique health history and can guide you on the interactions with potential medication you may already be on.

Be cautious around flashy labels on bottles. 'All-natural' doesn't always mean safe. The Food and Drug Administration, or FDA, doesn't approve these products for safety or effectiveness pre-sale, so your due diligence is incredibly important before you invest in any product.

Commonly Used Supplements for Migraine Relief

Now, if you're still reading we believe you're considering the route of supplements.

Let's take a look at some commonly used supplements:

Magnesium Magic
Many of us experiencing migraines have been found to have lower magnesium levels. This vital nutrient is essential for managing our blood pressure, blood sugar, and supporting muscle and nerve functions. While studies have varied results, if you're low on magnesium, supplementation might be beneficial.

But remember, using supplements is a delicate dance. Too much of a good thing can lead to side-effects. Be prepared to commit for at least three months to gauge its effectiveness.

Vitamin B Boost
B Vitamins have a crucial role in our body, helping create neurotransmitters like serotonin. These much-needed vitamins support our cognitive function and overall well being. Riboflavin (B2) plays a significant role in our metabolic processes and can support us in managing migraines. Starting with 400 mg of riboflavin for three months may help reduce the frequency and duration of migraines.

Vitamin D Dose
Vitamin D deficiency has been linked with migraines, and supplementing it has been shown to reduce the duration, frequency, and intensity of migraines. The usual recommendation ranges between 1,000 to 4,000 international units (IU) of vitamin D daily.

CoQ10, An Energy Producer
Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) has an essential role in energy production and has shown some positive effects in migraine management. However, always discuss with your healthcare team before starting any CoQ10 supplements, in case of potential interaction with other medications.

Feverfew, A Healing Herb
Feverfew can potentially reduce migraine frequency and symptoms like pain, nausea, and vomiting, but its efficiency is still debated. If you're on any anticoagulant drugs, a consultation with your healthcare provider is necessary before considering Feverfew.

Migraine Supplement Round Up
While supplements can offer support and bring some relief, they are just one part of a more comprehensive health plan. Attempting to get rid of versus managing migraines means considering your whole lifestyle and finding what's lacking, then integrating supplements, along with new daily habits that are right for you.

It's essential that safety remains a priority, and to always consult with your healthcare provider before starting any supplement routine.

Changing your lifestyle and environment alongside adding supplements based on your body's specific needs, can significantly shift your pain and overall health.

Sure, it doesn't happen overnight, but remember: every small step turns into a bigger leap, and we’re here to support you every step of the way!

If you feel like trying supplements, see this as a stepping stone towards understanding what your body needs.

A message from Debbie:
"I was once right where you are now.  100% believing there was NO WAY to end migraines and my only option was to learn how to live with them or find that magic pill that maybe would work for a while.  If anyone told me back then that I could end my pain once and for all, I would have called BS and popped another pill!

Skeptical times 10  was my middle name for sure because when you try it all and everyone tells you they can help you and they don’t.   You stop believing…  you lose HOPE!

I now realize I was approaching my migraines all backward.

I was trying to cover up symptoms versus trying to end my pain."
