When the Pain Isn’t the Worst Part

Is this you? You wake up already scanning your body, wondering if today is going to be one of those days. You analyze every twinge, every ache, trying to predict if a migraine is coming.

You research each symptom you are feeling. You take another pill, you read another article, you do all the things to try to stop it.

We get caught in this cycle of obsessing over the pain itself. And honestly—why wouldn’t we? The pain hurts. It stops us from working, from showing up for our families, from doing the things we love. It can land us in the ER. It can ruin a weekend, a vacation, a holiday. And the scariest part is, we don’t know how long it’s going to last. Of course we obsess.

But here’s the piece we don’t often pause to see: the emotional toll.

Migraines bring anxiety—always waiting for the next attack, never able to fully relax because you don’t know when it will hit.

They bring depression—you hate being thought of as the “sick one.” Your family sees you that way, your friends see you that way, and eventually you stop even talking about how bad it is. You smile, you say “I’m fine,” but inside, you’re carrying it alone.

They bring numbness—you try not to, but when you’re constantly being knocked down, sometimes going numb feels like the only way to survive.

They bring anger—why me, why now, why my family? And the anger doesn’t stay inside. It spills out. You get short with your spouse, you snap at your kids, you feel guilty on top of the pain.

Sometimes they even bring skepticism—skepticism that anything will ever work, that all the effort is worth it.

This back-and-forth is exhausting—mentally, emotionally, and physically. And here’s what we don’t always realize: that exhaustion and stress actually fuel the migraines.

The Science Behind It

When you live in constant fear and frustration, your body stays stuck in fight-or-flight mode. Your nervous system never gets the signal that the danger has passed. Stress hormones like cortisol stay elevated. Heart rate and blood pressure stay higher than they should. Digestion slows. The immune system weakens. And inflammation builds.

Chronic stress equals chronic inflammation. And chronic inflammation is one of the biggest drivers behind migraines and all those other symptoms—fatigue, brain fog, joint pain, allergies, poor sleep.

What I See in My Clients

I’ve had women tell me straight out, “Mindfulness isn’t my jam. I just want the food plan and the checklist.” But over time, they realized this was the missing piece.

  • Marie told me she hates to even imagine where she’d be without this work. Before, she was depressed, worried, and completely lost.
  • Jasmine shared she was most proud of finally putting herself out there—being honest about what she didn’t know and what she needed help with. That honesty gave her strength and connection.
  • Ellen admitted she had been pushing through for years, but through this work, she finally felt heard, seen, and supported.

Another woman told me she didn’t even realize how much fear she was carrying every single day until she finally learned how to release some of it. And when she did, her sleep improved, her energy came back, and her pain lessened.

Why This Matters

This is why emotional health can’t be ignored. Stress doesn’t just live in your head—it shows up in your body. And society doesn’t make it easy. We glorify the people who push through, who keep quiet, who never complain. But burying emotions doesn’t heal you. It makes you sicker.

That’s why inside the Freedom From Migraines Method®, we don’t skip this piece. Alongside the food and lifestyle strategies, we have a mindfulness coach and a supplemental course on emotional health and brain rewiring. Because it’s not enough to know the right foods or the right exercises. If you don’t reset the stress patterns, your body will stay inflamed, and you’ll stay stuck.

One Last Thought

So I’ll leave you with this: What are you most proud of in the last few months? Maybe it’s being honest about what you need. Maybe it’s finally putting your health first.

Whatever it is, recognize it. Supporting your emotional health isn’t extra—it’s essential. And it’s directly tied to your physical freedom.

Debbie will uncover what is holding them back from migraine freedom so they can live their life pain and symptom free, work productively, spend the time they want with family and friends, and stop missing out on the things they enjoy.

A message from Debbie:
"I was once right where you are now.  100% believing there was NO WAY to end migraines and my only option was to learn how to live with them or find that magic pill that maybe would work for a while.  If anyone told me back then that I could end my pain once and for all, I would have called BS and popped another pill!

Skeptical times 10  was my middle name for sure because when you try it all and everyone tells you they can help you and they don’t.   You stop believing…  you lose HOPE!

I now realize I was approaching my migraines all backward.

I was trying to cover up symptoms versus trying to end my pain."
