When You Can’t Tell If It’s Depression or Migraine… Here’s What’s Really Happening

There’s a moment so many women quietly wrestle with-the moment you’re not sure whether you’re dealing with depression… or another migraine.
And the truth most women never hear?
It’s usually both.
But not because you’re “broken.”
Not because you’re “too emotional.”
And definitely not because you “can’t handle life.”
There’s something else at play- something physical, biochemical, and completely real.
And once you understand it, everything finally starts to make sense.

The Science You Were Never Told: Your Inflammation Network Runs the Show

Most women are never told that the same inflammatory pathways that drive your migraines also affect your neurotransmitters.

When inflammation rises, it disrupts:

  • Serotonin (your stability, mood, and sense of wellbeing)
  • Dopamine (your motivation, drive, and “get things done” energy)
  • GABA (your calm, your sleep, your ability to slow your brain down)

So when inflammation spikes?

Your migraines get worse and your mood drops.
Your pain increases and your mental clarity disappears.
Your depression feels heavier and your emotional resilience shrinks.

Not because you’re “depressed.”
But because your brain chemistry is being dictated by inflammation- not the other way around.

And no one ever tells you that.

And Then There Are the Medications…

Most doctors mean well.

But the first line of defense they give women is medication.

A triptan to “stop the pain.”

An antidepressant to “balance your mood.”
A sleep med to “take the edge off.”

And sometimes you get temporary relief- enough to keep going.

But over time?

Many women start to feel:

  • Foggy
  • Detached
  • Flat
  • Emotionally muted
  • Just… not themselves

That’s because medication doesn’t address the inflammatory dysfunction driving the depression or the migraines.

It’s a Band-Aid.

And Band-Aids are meant to be temporary, not something you “change every day” for the rest of your life.

When you cut your finger, you use the Band-Aid while your body heals the underlying wound-
you don’t keep reapplying it forever.

The same should be true here.

The Part No One Talks About: Depression Worsens Pain, and Pain Worsens Depression

When inflammation disrupts neurotransmitters, your threshold for pain drops.

So you feel pain faster.

Pain lasts longer.
And emotional lows feel heavier.

And during the holidays?

The pressure increases:

  • The expectation to be “happy”
  • The fear of ruining plans
  • The guilt of needing to rest
  • The worry of missing traditions
  • The sadness of not being fully present with family

This is where so many women hit their emotional breaking point.

And I get it.

A Personal Moment I Don’t Share Often…

There was a holiday years ago when I completely lost track of time because I was lying on the couch in pain.
I thought I’d “just close my eyes for a minute.”

I woke up to realize…I never put the turkey in.

Dinner was hours behind.

Family was hungry and waiting.
And I was devastated — embarrassed, overwhelmed, and angry at my own body.

Not because of the turkey.
But because I hated who migraines were forcing me to be.

If you’ve had a moment like that- even a small one- you’re not alone.

And This Is the Part That Gives Me Hope Every Day

I’ve watched incredible women go from feeling weighed down by depression and pain to genuinely enjoying the season again.

Like Amy, who used to dread the holidays because smiling felt exhausting… and now looks forward to them.

Or Sue, who didn’t cook for years — no energy, no interest, and the smells would trigger migraines — and last year she hosted a holiday dinner for 15 people.

Or Brenda, who missed her church’s big December event year after year… and this year she’s helping lead it.

Or Jennifer, who spent last Christmas crying in the bathroom… and this year she told me she “smiled through the whole season.”

These transformations didn’t happen because they wished harder.

They happened because they addressed the inflammation that was driving everything.

The Root Cause Matters- And Support Matters Too

While your body works through inflammation, it’s normal to need emotional support.

That support might look like:

  • A therapist
  • A counselor
  • A pastor or faith leader

Or someone like me — a migraine freedom expert who understands both the inflammation and the emotional toll

These are healthy Band-Aids — the kind that help you heal while your system recalibrates.

And inside the Freedom From Migraine Method®, we take this seriously.

We even have a dedicated mindfulness coach because most women we work with are carrying decades of anxiety, sadness, irritability, and exhaustion.

You’re not imagining it.
You’re not weak.
And you’re not alone.

If You’re Listening to This and Thinking, “This Is Me…”

Then let’s assess what’s really going on in your system.

Not a sales call.
Not surface-level advice.
A real assessment of your migraines, inflammation patterns, mood symptoms, and what your next best step is.

And because it’s the holiday season and this time of year gets really hard for so many women,  I’m offering something special.

If, after your assessment, we decide that you’re a good fit for my deeper support, I’ll extend my Freedom From Migraines Method® holiday offer to you:

And you lock in 2025 pricing before it increases

This isn’t something I do often.

But if there’s any time of year women need support the most,  it’s right now.

Debbie will uncover what is holding them back from migraine freedom so they can live their life pain and symptom free, work productively, spend the time they want with family and friends, and stop missing out on the things they enjoy.

A message from Debbie:
"I was once right where you are now.  100% believing there was NO WAY to end migraines and my only option was to learn how to live with them or find that magic pill that maybe would work for a while.  If anyone told me back then that I could end my pain once and for all, I would have called BS and popped another pill!

Skeptical times 10  was my middle name for sure because when you try it all and everyone tells you they can help you and they don’t.   You stop believing…  you lose HOPE!

I now realize I was approaching my migraines all backward.

I was trying to cover up symptoms versus trying to end my pain."
